Week 05, 2011 training summary

First week of my three week taper is now officially in the bank.  However, I have to say that I was a little tired and sluggish on the mid-week runs.  I guess that is to be expected after finishing last weeks 91 miles.  On my weekend 12.5 I also felt a bit sluggish and was starting to doubt myself.  But then Sundays 20 mile long run felt great and quieted any doubts I had.  Of course I had the normal little aches and pains that come with the first taper week as the body heals with a lessened load of miles.  Overall I felt pretty good.

It felt a little strange doing 63 miles for a taper week, but I guess the miles should be a bit higher than marathon training when preparing for an ultra.  I anticipate feeling very good over the next week (second week of the taper) even though I will still be running 45 miles.

This past week I also started in earnest to get all of the supplies I will need for the race.  I am planning on consuming 350 calories per hour during the race (I will try to post my full plan later), so I needed to pick up some gels(32 of them) and Heed.  I also picked up some batteries for my light since I will be running almost half of the race in the dark.  Just for good measure I also picked up a backup light in case something happens to mine during the race. (rain, dropping, etc.)  Also bought some new velcro strips to hold my gaiters in place.

All in all, I think I am ready.  Now to continue with the next two weeks of taper.

Hi Adam…
I can’t believe you’re almost there! You’re going to do so awesome! I know late to the game probably but have you ever tried Perpetuem from Hammer? I swear this stuff is an instant pick-me-up and I have had huge success with it and doesn’t upset the stomach late in the game when those 23 of those GU’s may be difficult to swallow. Just a thought.

I wish I could be there for you during your race….ok, fly me out and I’ll be there :).
